Fitted Wardrobes Sutton in Ashfield
Most of Sutton’s bedrooms came out of one of two building programmes — the terraces that went up for the textile trade, and the estates built for the collieries — and both leave you with the same problem: a chimney breast in the middle of a wall and an alcove either side that no standard wardrobe fits.
We build wardrobes to the room across the town from our showroom on Derby Road in Stapleford. It is sixteen miles, about half an hour down the A38 and the M1, and worth saying plainly.
The alcoves
This is the whole case for fitted furniture in this housing. The two alcoves either side of a chimney breast are almost never the same width, and neither is a size anyone manufactures to.
Two made-to-measure units make both into proper hanging and shelving. Two shop-bought wardrobes leave a strip down each side that nothing useful ever goes in, and which you look at every morning for a decade.
Where the alcoves are deep enough for full 600mm hanging, you can put the wardrobes in them and use the chimney breast face for drawers or a dressing area — which keeps the room feeling open in a way one long wardrobe wall does not.
The terraces and their ceilings
Higher ceilings than the estate housing, and a freestanding wardrobe stops about a metre short of them. Floor-to-ceiling units recover that as a full extra shelf.
Older floors in these houses tend to run out of level, which matters if you want sliding doors — the track fixes to floor and ceiling and wants both reasonably true. Workable, but it needs finding at survey.
The box room
The third bedroom over the stairs defeats standard furniture entirely. A fitted run down one wall with sideways hanging — rail front to back rather than across — plus drawers underneath turns it into a usable single room. It holds less than full-depth hanging and considerably more than nothing.
Dense Victorian terracing, extensive postwar estate housing and later private development on the edges — small tall bedrooms in the first, squarer ones in the rest.
Soft-close runners and hinges, properly edged doors and a carcass fixed back to the structure. The hardware is what decides how a run feels after eight years.

Sliding or hinged
Sliding needs no clearance in front, which suits the smaller back bedrooms across the estates where the bed sits close to the wardrobe wall. Costs about 100mm of depth to the track and shows half the interior at a time.
Hinged gives the full opening and the full depth, and needs around 600mm of swing. Where the room has it, it is the better option.
Depth is the constant either way: a coat hanger is roughly 450mm across the shoulders, so the door needs about 550mm of internal depth to close without pressing on the clothes — 600mm with the carcass.
Doors
Coloured glass sliding doors, including yellow, aqua and green, plus framed and mirrored options.
Mirrored genuinely helps in the smaller north-facing bedrooms common across the estates. The honest caveat is that a wall of mirror shows every mark and gets cleaned more often than anyone expects.
In the terraced stock almost every bedroom has a chimney breast with two unequal alcoves. Building into both and carrying the fronts flush across the breast is what turns that wall into storage.
Measuring both alcoves separately is not optional, they are rarely within 50mm of each other.
Long hang around 1.5 metres, short hang around 1 metre, and drawers in the proportion you actually need. Standard configurations almost always give too much long hang and too few drawers.
It is the part of the wardrobe you interact with every day and the part nobody looks at in a showroom.
