Fitted Wardrobes Cropwell Bishop

Cropwell Bishop and Cropwell Butler are two separate villages about a mile apart. This is the larger one, in the Vale of Belvoir, with the creamery at the edge of it.

The housing is period brick cottages and farmhouses around the old core with postwar and modern development around them, and the bedrooms in each group want different things.

We build wardrobes to the room across both villages from our showroom on Derby Road in Stapleford, fourteen miles west, about half an hour.

Cottage and farmhouse bedrooms

Walls that are nowhere near straight, floors that have settled over two centuries, and in some of them structural timbers that cannot be moved.

This is exactly what fitted furniture is for. Units get scribed to what the wall actually does, so the joint closes tight along its whole length. A shop-bought wardrobe in the same spot sits proud at one end, and that gap never stops being visible.

Sloping ceilings are common where a bedroom sits partly under the roof. That area is useless for anything freestanding and genuinely good for built-in storage — drawers or low hanging under the slope, where the height is too low to stand but perfectly adequate for folded clothes.

One practical note: sliding doors run on tracks fixed to the floor and the ceiling, and want both reasonably true. In a building that has settled over two hundred years that is worth checking at survey rather than assuming.

The newer housing

Regular rooms, straight walls, level floors. Simpler and quicker to fit, with less scribing and fewer specials. Master bedrooms usually have the swing room for hinged doors, which give the full opening and the full depth rather than showing half the interior at a time.

Depth, and the number that keeps coming up

A coat hanger is about 450mm across the shoulders. For a door to close without pressing on the clothes you need roughly 550mm of internal depth — 600mm including the carcass.

Below that you are into sideways hanging, with the rail running front to back. It works and it holds less, and in a small cottage bedroom it is sometimes the only thing that fits.

The period brick in the village core has thick walls, deep reveals and bedrooms that are not square. Every run here is scribed rather than pushed against a wall.

A modular wardrobe against a bowed wall leaves a tapering gap at one end that no amount of filler disguises. Made-to-measure furniture is not a luxury in this stock, it is what produces a clean line.

The postwar and modern housing around the core has none of those constraints, and a straightforward fitted run works perfectly well there.

Doors

Coloured glass sliding doors including yellow, aqua and green, plus framed and mirrored. Framed suits the older property better than a flat unbroken slab against original joinery.

In farmhouse bedrooms the ceiling is frequently neither flat nor level, and sometimes has a beam running through it.

A full-height run has to be scribed to that ceiling line, or deliberately stopped below it with a shadow gap. Both work; pretending the ceiling is flat does not.

Country houses tend to need more boot and coat storage and more bulk space than a suburban equivalent. The internal configuration should reflect that rather than a standard hanging split.

Shelving depth, drawer sizes and the long-to-short hang ratio all get set to what is actually going in.
