Hucknall’s bedrooms come in three broad shapes, and each one makes a different case for fitted furniture.
We build wardrobes to the room across the town, from our showroom on Derby Road in Stapleford — about nine miles south, twenty-five minutes down the A611 and A6002.
Colliery-era estate housing
The bulk of Hucknall. Large interwar and postwar semis and terraces built when the pits were working, with bedrooms that are regular in shape but rarely generous — and almost always with a chimney breast on one wall.
That chimney breast is the argument. It leaves an alcove either side, usually of different widths, and neither one is a size any freestanding wardrobe is made to fit. Two made-to-measure units turn both into proper hanging and shelving. Two shop-bought wardrobes leave a gap down each side that nothing useful ever goes in.
The third bedroom in these houses is normally the box room over the stairs, and it defeats standard furniture entirely. A fitted run down one wall with sideways hanging — rail front to back rather than across — plus drawers below makes it a usable single room. It holds less than a full-depth wardrobe. It holds vastly more than nothing.
The older terraces
Near the town centre, with higher ceilings than the estate housing. Height is the opportunity: a freestanding wardrobe stops around two metres and leaves the rest as dead air, while floor-to-ceiling units take that back as a full extra shelf.
Older floors in these houses tend to slope toward the front, which matters if you want sliding doors — the track fixes to floor and ceiling and wants both reasonably level. Workable, but it needs finding at survey rather than on the day.
Newer housing off the bypass
Regular rooms, straight walls, level floors. Simpler and usually quicker to fit because there is less scribing and fewer specials. These are also the houses most likely to have a loft conversion, where built-in eaves storage along the low walls is the only way to use space that nothing off a shelf can reach.
The Victorian terraces have small bedrooms with good ceiling height. The interwar and postwar estate housing built for the collieries has squarer rooms and more floor area, and usually a box room as well.
In a family house the parts that wear are the runners, the hinges and the door edges. Soft-close hardware and a properly edged door outlast the finish by years.

Sliding or hinged
Sliding needs no clearance in front, which matters in the smaller back bedrooms across the estates where the bed sits close to the wardrobe wall. It costs about 100mm of depth to the track and shows half the interior at a time.
Hinged gives the full opening and full depth, and needs roughly 600mm of swing. In the front bedrooms of the semis there is usually room, and where there is, it is the better option.
The 600mm rule
A coat hanger is about 450mm across the shoulders, so you need roughly 550mm internal depth for the door to close without pressing on the clothes — 600mm with the carcass. Below that, sideways hanging is the answer.
A typical house in this stock has a double, a smaller double and a box room, and each wants a different answer.
The principal bedroom takes a full-height run across one wall. The second usually suits an alcove build either side of the chimney breast. The box room needs a shallow 450mm run so there is still floor left to stand on.
North-facing back bedrooms in terraced housing get very little direct light. A mirrored sliding front on the wall opposite the window pushes what light there is back into the room.
It also removes the need for a separate mirror, which in a small bedroom is a genuine saving of wall.

Doors
Sliding doors in coloured glass — yellow, aqua and green among them — plus framed and mirrored.
Mirrored works genuinely well in the smaller north-facing bedrooms common across the estates, with the honest caveat that a full wall of mirror shows every mark and gets cleaned more often than people expect.
