Tollerton’s houses sit on larger plots than the equivalent suburban streets nearer the city, and the bedrooms are generally more generous as a result. That opens up options that are not available in tighter housing.
We build wardrobes to the room across the village from our showroom on Derby Road in Stapleford, ten miles west, about twenty-four minutes.
Where there is room, hinged doors win
In most of the housing we cover, sliding doors are the practical answer because the bedroom is too tight for anything else.
Here, master bedrooms usually have the 600mm of swing space that hinged doors need — and where they do, hinged is the better option. You see the whole interior at once rather than half of it, and you keep the full carcass depth rather than losing about 100mm to a sliding track.
Sliding still has its place in the second and third bedrooms, where the bed often sits close to the wardrobe wall.
Running two walls instead of one
Where a bedroom has the floor area, wardrobes down two walls with a dressing area between them works better than one long run. Same hanging length, better access, and somewhere to stand and get dressed that is not the end of the bed.
A dressing area needs around 900mm of width, a socket at the right height, and light from the front rather than directly overhead — downlights above a mirror put your own face in shadow.
The older village core
Period property with walls that are not straight and floors that have settled. Fitted units are scribed to what the wall actually does, so the joint closes along its whole length. A freestanding wardrobe sits proud at one end and stays that way.
Ceiling heights in the older property are often generous, and taking units right up recovers close to a metre of otherwise dead wall as a full extra shelf.
Tollerton has a historic core and substantial postwar and later housing on plots bigger than the suburban equivalent, which usually shows up as bedrooms with room to spare.
With around 600mm of clearance in front, hinged doors give full access and about 100mm more usable depth than a slider.
In the larger houses a box room or part of a big bedroom can become a walk-in rather than a wardrobe run, given about 1.1 metres of clear central space.

A coat hanger is about 450mm across the shoulders, so a door needs roughly 550mm of internal depth to close without pressing on the clothes — 600mm including the carcass.

In a big bedroom the danger is a run that just stretches. Breaking it into hanging, drawers and a full-height section, with a mirrored or glazed panel to lift it, stops a long wall reading as a fence.
Where an en-suite adjoins, aligning the run with the door keeps the sightline clean.
Where two people share, the internals should be split by what each actually owns rather than symmetrically down the middle — different hanging heights, and drawers weighted accordingly.
