Fitted Wardrobes Cotgrave
Cotgrave has two kinds of bedroom, built roughly sixty years apart, and they want different things.
The postwar estates put up for the colliery have regular rooms with lower ceilings, standard proportions and — almost universally — a chimney breast with an alcove either side. The newer housing built on and around the former pit site has higher ceilings, larger glazing and level floors.
We build wardrobes to the room across both, from our showroom on Derby Road in Stapleford, about twelve miles west.
The pit housing
These bedrooms are straightforward in shape and awkward in the details. The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are almost never the same width, and neither is a size anyone manufactures a wardrobe to fit.
Two made-to-measure units turn both into proper hanging and shelving. Two shop-bought wardrobes leave a strip down each side that nothing goes in.
The third bedroom in this housing is typically the box room over the stairs, and it defeats standard furniture entirely. A fitted run down one wall with sideways hanging — rail front to back rather than across — plus drawers beneath makes it a usable single bedroom.
Ceiling heights here are lower than in the Victorian stock, which changes the calculation on floor-to-ceiling units: there is less dead air above a standard wardrobe to recover, so the gain is smaller. It is still a gain, and it removes the dust gap, but it is worth being realistic about.
The newer housing
Regular rooms, straight walls, level floors, and generally higher ceilings than the pit housing. Simpler and quicker to fit — less scribing, fewer specials — and the extra height makes floor-to-ceiling genuinely worthwhile.
Master bedrooms in this stock frequently have room for hinged doors, which give the full opening and the full depth rather than showing half the interior at a time.
Sliding or hinged
Sliding needs no clearance in front, which matters in the smaller bedrooms across the estates where the bed sits close to the wardrobe wall. It costs roughly 100mm of depth to the track assembly.
Hinged gives the whole opening and the full depth and needs about 600mm of swing.
Depth is the constant: a coat hanger is roughly 450mm across the shoulders, so a door needs around 550mm of internal depth to close without pressing on the clothes — 600mm including the carcass. Below that you are into sideways hanging, which works and holds less.
The estate housing built for the colliery repeats the same bedroom layouts across the town, which makes fitted furniture straightforward and predictable here.
Because the rooms repeat, less has to be made to accommodate an irregularity, so more of the budget goes into the internals and the door finish rather than into making-good.
The recent development on the former pit site is modern stock with square rooms and level floors, where sliding doors and a full-height run install cleanly.

Doors
Coloured glass sliding doors including yellow, aqua and green, plus framed and mirrored options.
Mirrored works well in the smaller north-facing bedrooms common across the older estates. The honest caveat is cleaning — a wall of mirror shows every mark.
Almost every house in this stock has a box room, and it is where fitted furniture earns most of its money.
A shallow run at 450mm rather than a full 600mm still takes folded clothes, shelving and short hang, while leaving floor space a standard wardrobe would swallow. Where the room doubles as a study, the same run can carry a desk return.
Sliders need no swing space and suit a room where the bed is close to the wardrobe wall. Hinged doors give the full internal depth and complete access at once, but need around 600mm of clearance in front.
Which one suits is a question about the room, not about taste.
Replacing several freestanding pieces with one built-in run against a single wall is what makes a modest bedroom feel larger — more than any colour choice will.
