Kitchens Papplewick
Papplewick is a small village north of Nottingham with a historic core, period stone and brick property, and the Victorian pumping station that most people know it for.
The kitchens here are mostly in older buildings, and they come with the constraints that go with that. We design and fit across the village and the villages nearby from our showroom on Derby Road in Stapleford, eleven miles south, about twenty-five minutes.
Period kitchens
Thick stone and brick walls, ceilings that change height from room to room, and floors that have settled over a century or more.
Everything gets scribed to the wall rather than pushed against it. A standard wall-unit run at standard height will foul a low ceiling in a fair proportion of these rooms — a survey question rather than a showroom one, and considerably cheaper resolved before anything is ordered.

Where the ceiling is low, taking wall units right up to it gives a full extra shelf and removes the dust gap on top. In a smaller kitchen that storage matters more than a cornice does.
Papplewick is a village of a few hundred people with period stone and brick property, some substantial houses, and very little modern development to dilute it.
Stone buildings are unforgiving to fitted furniture. Openings are deep, walls are thick and irregular, and internal faces are rarely flat. Framed cabinetry with scribed panels is the only approach that gives a clean line against a wall like that.
Given the historic core and the pumping station, it is very likely that parts of the village sit within a conservation area, but that should be confirmed for a specific address rather than assumed.
Where it applies, external changes such as a new extract vent on a visible elevation can need consent from Gedling Borough Council. It rarely stops a kitchen; it routinely changes where the extraction runs.

Services decide more than the layout
In older village property the real constraint is rarely the design and almost always where the services already run. Waste is fixed, gas is often surface-mounted, and moving a sink any distance means achieving a fall to the existing waste.
On a solid floor that is a bigger job than it appears. Doable, but it belongs in the plan and the price from the start.
Several of the larger properties in the village have the room for a contemporary kitchen, generally in a later extension rather than the original fabric.
Where the room is modern, a modern kitchen is a legitimate choice. Where it is not, forcing a handleless scheme into a stone-walled room tends to expose every irregularity rather than hide it.
In older buildings the least invasive layout is usually the cheapest by a wide margin. Moving a sink is a small change on a drawing and a significant one in a solid stone wall.

Pentland Shale and Denton Porcelain Cashmere both read as contemporary without shouting, which suits a village of this character better than high gloss.

Where a property is listed, internal alterations can need consent as well as external ones, through Gedling Borough Council. It rarely stops a kitchen; it does change what can be done to walls and where extraction can run.
Doors and colour
Painted shaker suits this housing. Rooms with small original windows take deeper colour better than pale finishes, which go flat and grey in that light — Colbeck Heritage Green and Georgian Thicket both hold their depth.
Warwick is the in-frame range, with the door set inside the cabinet frame rather than on the face of it. The more traditional construction, and the right look in period village property.
Denton Porcelain Cashmere is the pale option for the brighter rooms. We fit Neff appliances, including the venting hobs.
