Fitted Wardrobes Long Eaton
Long Eaton is three miles from our showroom, which makes it the easiest town on our list to survey properly — and surveying properly is most of what decides whether fitted furniture fits.
We build wardrobes to the room across the town, from the terraced streets off Tamworth Road to the interwar semis and the postwar estates.
Lace-town terraces, and the ceilings
Long Eaton grew on lace manufacturing, and the Victorian and Edwardian housing that came with it has generous ceiling heights for the size of the rooms.
That is the opportunity. A freestanding wardrobe stops at about two metres and leaves everything above it as dead air, which in a room with a nine-foot ceiling is close to a metre of wasted wall. Floor-to-ceiling fitted units take that back as a full extra shelf — the one you use for suitcases, spare bedding and the things that currently live in the loft.
The other feature of these houses is the chimney breast, with an alcove either side that is almost never the same width. Two made-to-measure units make both usable. Two freestanding wardrobes leave a gap down each side that collects dust for a decade.
Already-extended houses
A lot of the Long Eaton terraces have had a rear extension added at some point, which frequently changes the shape of the back bedroom above it — a step in the wall, a lower section of ceiling, or a window in an unexpected place.
Those rooms defeat standard furniture and are exactly where building to the room pays. The awkward section becomes storage instead of a gap you put a chair in.
Sliding or hinged
Sliding needs no clearance in front, which matters in the back bedrooms here, where the bed is often close to the wardrobe wall. The trade-off is depth — the track takes about 100mm — and you see half the interior at once.
Hinged gives the full opening and the full depth and needs roughly 600mm of swing. In the larger front bedrooms of the semis there is usually room, and where there is, it is the better choice.
Worth flagging before survey: sliding doors run on tracks fixed to the floor and the ceiling, and both want to be reasonably level. In the older terraces, floors slope towards the front of the house more often than not. It is workable, but it needs finding at survey rather than on fitting day — which is easier when we are ten minutes away.
Long Eaton's terraces have mostly been extended, and bedrooms over an older rear addition need their floor checking before a full-height run goes in.
A full wardrobe run loaded with clothes is a real load spread along one wall. On a suspended timber floor over an old extension that is worth confirming rather than assuming.

Depth, and the 600mm rule
A coat hanger is about 450mm across the shoulders. For the door to close without pressing on the clothes you need around 550mm internal, which with the carcass lands at 600mm.
Narrower than that and you are into sideways hanging, rail running front to back. It holds less, and in a box room over the stairs it is often the only thing that fits — still far better than no fitted storage.
Doors
Sliding doors in coloured glass — yellow, aqua and green among them — plus framed and mirrored options.
Mirrored genuinely works in the smaller north-facing bedrooms common in the terraces. The honest caveat is cleaning: a full wall of mirror opposite a window shows every mark.
Framed doors suit the period houses better, where a flat unbroken slab can look wrong against original skirting and picture rails.
Where a house has been extended, the junction between old and new frequently leaves a wall that is out of true or a ceiling that steps slightly.
A made-to-measure run absorbs that at the scribe. A modular unit sets the discrepancy out in plain sight at one end, which is exactly where the eye goes.
Sliders need no clearance and suit a room where the bed is tight to the wardrobe wall, at the cost of about 100mm of depth and only half the interior being open at once.
Hinged doors need around 600mm of swing but give full depth and full access. In most Long Eaton bedrooms the room decides, not the preference.
