Ilkeston sits on a hill, and that fact turns up in more bathrooms than you would expect.
The town’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces were built across the slope, which means a lot of them step down from front to back. Where the bathroom was added later over the rear outrigger — which is where almost all of them are — the floor level, the window height and the run of the waste all get decided by that slope rather than by anything a designer chose.

The Ilkeston bathroom, and what it wants
The typical one is long, narrow, has a single external wall, and is colder than the rest of the house because it was built as an addition rather than as part of the original envelope.
That shape rewards working down one side rather than trying to place a standard suite in the middle of it. A run of fitted furniture along the longer wall, the WC boxed into it, and the shower at the far end where the room is coldest and you are least likely to stand about. It uses the length instead of fighting it.
The rooms in the interwar semis around Kirk Hallam and Cotmanhay are a different proposition — square, upstairs, part of the original build, and generally warmer. Those take a separate bath and shower comfortably.

Ilkeston’s terraces run across a hill, and the floors in them frequently fall from one side of a room to the other. In a bathroom that matters more than anywhere else in the house, because water finds the low point whether you planned for it or not.
A shower tray has to be set level regardless of what the floor does, and a wet room floor has to fall deliberately to the drain rather than accidentally to a corner. Both are established at survey, not on fitting day.
The typical terrace bathroom here is in a rear addition, narrow, one external wall, a small window onto the yard, and the coldest room in the house.
Without extraction ducted properly outside on a run-on timer, moisture goes into the plaster and the paint lifts within two winters. Insulated backer board behind the tiling is usually worth including at the same time.
One of the closest towns to the showroom. Easy to come twice before deciding, which from this distance is what most people do.

Water pressure, which matters here
A lot of Ilkeston’s older housing is still on a gravity-fed system with the cold tank in the loft. With that arrangement, the pressure at your shower head depends on how far it sits below the tank — so a shower on the first floor of a two-storey terrace often delivers less than people expect, regardless of what is on the wall.
That is worth establishing before a shower is chosen rather than afterwards. Sometimes the answer is a pump, sometimes it is a different type of shower entirely, and occasionally it is a change to the whole system. All three are cheaper decided early.

Ventilation in a hillside terrace. Rear-outrigger bathrooms with one external wall and a small window are the hardest rooms in the house to ventilate properly. Without real extraction, the moisture goes into the plaster and the paint lifts within a couple of winters — usually on the wall furthest from the window. An extractor ducted to the outside, running on a timer, solves it. An extractor ducted into the loft void does not, and we still find them.
