The period brick and cottages around the centre of Breaston often have ceilings well below modern standard, and in an upstairs bathroom that can be compounded by a sloping ceiling under the roof.
Head height over a shower is the constraint that decides the layout. You want full standing height where you actually stand, which usually means putting the shower on the wall with the ridge above it rather than under the slope, even when that is not where the plumbing currently is.
Small windows, thick walls and a room that is the coldest in the house is a recipe for condensation. An extractor ducted properly to the outside on a run-on timer is not optional in this stock.
Ducting into a loft void is not a solution. It moves the moisture rather than removing it, and we still find it regularly.

Bathrooms in these houses were almost always carved out of something else — a box room, the end of a landing, part of a bedroom — which is why so few of them are a sensible shape. Thick walls, ceilings that vary from room to room, and floors that have moved over a century or two.
Fitted furniture is the answer, because it can be scribed to walls that wander rather than sat against them with a filler strip covering the gap. Where there is unused height above a standard vanity — common here — building up into it turns a basin unit into genuine storage.
Two things worth checking early in period property. Floor structure, if a freestanding or cast-iron bath is on the list: full of water and a person, it is a serious point load, and older joists frequently need checking. It is not a reason to avoid one, but it is a reason to find out before it is ordered.
And ventilation. Period bathrooms were ventilated by draughty windows. Modern ones are sealed, and without real extraction ducted to the outside the moisture goes into the plaster and the paint lifts within two winters. An extractor can always be sited discreetly; it cannot be skipped.

Larger, more regular rooms, usually a family bathroom plus at least one en-suite. These are the rooms where wall-hung furniture and a walk-in shower look right, and where there is genuinely space to separate the bath and the shower rather than compromising with one over the other.
Wall-hung needs a frame fixed back to something structural — in a stud wall, opening it up and adding noggins. Worth confirming that is in any quote you are comparing, because it is the part that gets left out.
