West Bridgford bedrooms are, on the whole, the easiest ones in the county to do something good with. Edwardian and 1930s housing on wide streets, generous proportions, high-ish ceilings, and a bay window in the front bedroom of a very large proportion of it.
The bay is the interesting part. It takes out the wall you would otherwise have filled, and it is the feature people most often want to keep visible rather than build across. The usual answer is a run either side of it and a low unit — seat height, with drawers or a lift-up lid — beneath the window itself. That turns the bay into storage and a window seat at once instead of an awkward gap between two wardrobes.
Chimney breasts
Almost universal in this housing, usually on the party wall, with an alcove either side of a slightly different width. Fitted units make both usable; freestanding wardrobes leave a strip down each side that collects dust.
The alcoves in these houses are often deep enough for full 600mm hanging, which is not true everywhere. Where they are, you can put the hanging in the alcoves and use the chimney breast face for a dressing area or a run of drawers — which keeps the room feeling open in a way a single long wardrobe wall does not.

There is normally room for a proper one here, and it is worth doing properly: a worktop with knee space, a socket at the right height, and light from the front rather than above. Downlights directly overhead put your own face in shadow. It is the most common complaint about bedroom lighting and the easiest thing to avoid at the design stage.
Loft conversions
West Bridgford has a great many, and the eaves are the entire argument for fitted furniture up there. Standing height exists only in the middle of the room, so built-in storage along the low walls is the only way that space becomes usable at all. Nothing off a shelf reaches it.

Hanging is usually the bulk of the job. Hinged doors give the full opening and full depth and need about 600mm of swing — which these rooms generally have, and where they do it is the better choice. Sliding is the answer where the bed sits close to the wardrobe wall, at the cost of roughly 100mm of depth to the track.
We hold sliding doors in coloured glass, framed and mirrored, and the framed options suit this period housing better than a flat unbroken slab, which can look wrong against original skirting and picture rails.

A bay is an opportunity rather than an obstacle. A window seat with drawers under it, or a low run following the bay, uses a space that otherwise takes a chair nobody sits in.
Original coving, picture rails and deep skirtings are part of why these houses are worth what they are, and a fitted run should not simply cut through them.
We scribe over the skirting rather than removing it, and stop the wardrobe below the picture rail where there is one. It costs a little more in fitting time and it keeps the room's character intact.
