Beeston has two quite different customers for bedroom furniture, and it is worth knowing which one you are before anybody quotes.
There are the family homes — interwar semis and the larger Victorian and Edwardian houses — where a fitted bedroom is a long-term piece of furniture and the brief is about getting the room right.
And there is a substantial rental and HMO market near the centre and the university, where the brief is entirely different: hard-wearing, simple, quick to fit, easy to clean and easy to repair. Nothing delicate, nothing that needs looking after.

For landlords
The things that matter in a let property are not the things that matter in a family home.
Drawer runners and hinges take the most abuse and are the first thing to fail, so they are worth over-specifying rather than under. Melamine and laminate finishes survive cleaning products that would ruin a painted door. Sliding doors have fewer parts sticking out to be damaged than hinged ones.
And fitted beats freestanding for a simple practical reason: it cannot be pushed about, scraped along the wall, or taken when someone leaves.
For family homes
The Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the centre have good ceiling height, and that is the opportunity — a freestanding wardrobe stops about a metre short of the ceiling and leaves the rest doing nothing. Floor-to-ceiling units recover it as a full extra shelf.
They also have a chimney breast with two unequal alcoves, and a box room over the stairs that standard furniture cannot use. A fitted run with sideways hanging makes it a usable single bedroom.
The interwar semis have bay windows and better proportions, with room for a proper dressing area — 900mm of worktop, a socket at the right height, and light from the front rather than overhead, because downlights above a mirror put your face in shadow.

Sliding doors need no clearance in front and cost about 100mm of depth to the track. Hinged need around 600mm of swing. A coat hanger is roughly 450mm across the shoulders, so 600mm total depth lets a door close cleanly.

The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Beeston centre have decent ceiling height and small floor areas, which is exactly the combination fitted furniture is for. A freestanding wardrobe wastes the metre of air above it; a fitted run does not.
Beeston has a substantial rental and HMO market alongside owner-occupiers, and they want different things. A let room needs hard-wearing surfaces, simple robust hardware and a fast turnaround between tenancies. An owner's bedroom can justify softer detailing and a more considered internal layout.
We specify differently for each rather than pretending they are the same job.
Long hang wants about 1.5 metres of clear drop, short hang about 1 metre. Getting that split right for what you actually own matters far more than the door style.
Most wardrobes are sold with too much long hang and not enough drawers. Three miles from the showroom, it is easy to come and open a few and see.
