Two miles from our showroom, which in practice means we can measure the same week and the workshop is minutes away if anything needs adjusting on fitting day.
Trowell is a village of a couple of thousand, with older cottages near the church and a good deal of substantial postwar and 1970s detached and semi-detached housing — generally on larger plots than the equivalent streets in Stapleford or Beeston.
What a fitted bedroom includes
Hanging, drawers, a dressing area and the bedside, designed as one piece rather than bought separately and arranged around whichever wall is free.
Drawers are the part most people under-order. Deep ones for bedding and jumpers, shallow ones for everything that currently lives on a chair. A dressing area needs less width than expected — around 900mm works — but it needs a socket at the right height and light from the front rather than directly overhead, because downlights above a mirror put your own face in shadow.
The postwar and 1970s housing
Regular rooms, straight walls, level floors, and a chimney breast in most of the older ones with an alcove either side of a different width. Two made-to-measure units make both properly usable; two shop-bought wardrobes leave a strip down each side that nothing goes in.
Ceiling heights in this stock are lower than in Victorian housing, so floor-to-ceiling units gain less than they would elsewhere. Still a gain, and it removes the dust shelf — but worth being realistic about rather than specifying out of habit.
These houses are straightforward to fit: less scribing, fewer specials, and master bedrooms usually have the swing room for hinged doors, which give the full opening and the full depth rather than showing half the interior at a time.
The older cottages
Thick walls that are nowhere near straight, and floors that have settled. Fitted units get scribed to what the wall actually does so the joint closes along its whole length — precisely what freestanding furniture cannot do.

Sliding doors need no clearance in front and cost about 100mm of depth to the track. Hinged need roughly 600mm of swing. A coat hanger is about 450mm across the shoulders, so you want around 600mm of total depth for a door to close cleanly.
We hold sliding doors in coloured glass — yellow, aqua and green among them — plus framed and mirrored options.

Where there is space in front of the wardrobe wall, hinged doors become viable, and they give full access to the interior and about 100mm more usable depth than sliders.
In the larger houses there is sometimes scope to turn a box room or a section of a big bedroom into a walk-in dressing area rather than a wardrobe run.
It needs about 1.1 metres of clear central space between hanging on both sides to work properly. Below that it becomes a corridor you shuffle down, which is worse than a good wardrobe.
