Bathrooms Cropwell Bishop

Cropwell Bishop is the larger of the two Cropwell villages — the one with the creamery — about a mile from Cropwell Butler, and the two are confused constantly.

The housing is period brick cottages and farmhouses around the old core, with postwar and modern development around them. We fit bathrooms across both villages and the Vale of Belvoir from our showroom on Derby Road in Stapleford, fourteen miles west, about half an hour.

Cottage and farmhouse bathrooms

None of this housing was built with plumbing in the plan. Every bathroom is a conversion of something else, which is why so few of them are a sensible shape and why standard furniture so often needs a filler panel at one end.

Fitted furniture is scribed to what the wall actually does. In brick and stone property where nothing is square, that is the difference between a joint that closes and a gap you look at every day.

Where a section of ceiling slopes under the roof, that area is unusable for anything standing and genuinely good for low storage or a vanity built to the slope.

The period brick cottages and farmhouses in the core of Cropwell Bishop tend to have bathrooms that were fitted into rooms never designed for them — an old box room, or a space partitioned off a landing.

Irregular shapes are the norm. Fitted furniture that can be scribed to a wall handles that far better than freestanding pieces, which simply announce every gap where the wall runs out.

Village properties frequently run gravity-fed hot water from a cylinder, and sometimes on a mains supply that is not as strong as a town’s.

Both affect shower choice. A pumped or unvented system transforms what is possible, and it is worth establishing the existing setup before falling for a shower that needs pressure the house cannot give it.

Worth ringing 0115 877 7595 before setting off, to be sure a particular range is out on the floor.

What comes up most

Ventilation. Solid walls, small original windows, no natural air movement once modern glazing is in. Extraction ducted properly to the outside on a run-on timer, or the plaster takes the moisture and the paint lifts within two winters.

Water supply. Much of the older property out here is gravity-fed from a tank in the loft, so pressure at the shower head depends on how far below it the shower sits. First-floor showers often underdeliver whatever is on the wall. Worth establishing before anything is chosen.

Consent. Where a property is listed, alterations affecting the fabric can need approval from Rushcliffe Borough Council, including a new extract vent through a visible elevation.

The newer housing

Regular rooms, straight walls, straightforward plumbing, usually a family bathroom plus an en-suite. Wall-hung furniture suits these and needs a frame fixed back to something structural.
