Edwalton is one of the few places we cover where an island is a realistic proposition rather than something that gets drawn and then abandoned at the measuring stage.
The housing is mostly postwar detached and recent estate development, with higher ceilings, larger glazing and open-plan layouts either already present or easy to create. That changes the conversation from “how do we fit this in” to “what do we actually want”.

What an island actually needs
Worth being precise, because this is where plans go wrong.
Roughly a metre of clear floor all the way round it to be comfortable. More like 1.2 metres on the working side if two people use the kitchen at the same time. Under that it stops being a worktop and becomes an obstacle you edge past.
If the island carries the sink or the hob, services have to reach it — which on a solid ground floor means chasing the slab for waste and power, and that is a decision made at the start rather than halfway through.
Edwalton is mostly modern, but the original village core is not, and the houses there behave like period property anywhere, thicker walls, less regular rooms, and a layout that predates the idea of a kitchen as a living space.
A traditional framed kitchen suits them, and in-frame construction in particular. Warwick is the range, with the door set inside the frame rather than on its face.
Most traditional kitchens we fit in Edwalton are not in old houses at all. They go into postwar and modern detached homes where the owners want the warmth of a painted shaker rather than the coolness of a handleless scheme.
That works, and it is worth being deliberate about it: a classic door with a modern layout, deep drawers throughout and an island, rather than a pastiche of a farmhouse kitchen in a nineteen-eighties house.
Big rooms take stronger colour than small ones, because there is enough light and enough wall to balance it. Colbeck Heritage Green and Novoli Admiral Blue both hold up at scale where they would close down a cottage.

Vented cooktops
If the hob goes on the island, a vented cooktop is worth serious consideration: extraction built into the hob itself rather than a canopy hanging over it, so nothing interrupts the sightline across an open-plan room.
It costs more than a canopy and it is not right for every layout. In a large open room where the island is the centrepiece, it usually solves a problem nothing else does. We fit Neff appliances including the venting hobs.
Edwalton is one of the few places on our patch where island-capable, genuinely open-plan kitchens are the norm rather than the ambition. The recent estate development was built that way, and the postwar detached stock extends easily.
With that much space the risk inverts. The danger is not fitting everything in, it is a room so open that nothing has a defined place and every surface becomes a dumping ground.
The fix is a working triangle kept tight inside a large space, rather than spread across it. Sink, hob and fridge stay close together; the island carries preparation and seating; the tall bank holds everything else on one wall.
Walking twelve feet for a colander is a design failure, not a feature.
Zagen and Cameo cover the handleless ranges. Over an island we would usually specify a Neff venting hob rather than a canopy, so nothing hangs in the middle of a room that was opened up precisely to be clear.

The older village core
Different job entirely — thicker walls, lower ceilings, rooms that are not square. Fitted furniture scribed to the wall rather than pushed against it, and a standard wall-unit run can foul a lower ceiling. Survey questions rather than showroom ones.
Doors and colour
The larger, brighter rooms in Edwalton carry pale finishes well, which is not true everywhere — Denton Porcelain Cashmere and Clarkwell Light Grey Graphite both work here where they would go flat in a north-facing terrace.
Zagen and Cameo cover the handleless end, which suits the open-plan rooms. For the older village property, Colbeck Heritage Green and Georgian Thicket hold their depth, and Warwick is the in-frame range where the door sits inside the cabinet frame.
An easy run across to Stapleford. Parking on site at Derby Road, and you can walk in without booking.
If the house is recent you probably have a floor plan. It is the single most useful thing to arrive with, more than measurements.
We plan the layout with you and then measure properly before anything is ordered. On open-plan projects the survey also confirms what the structure will allow.
Edwalton is Rushcliffe. Removing a wall to open a kitchen into a dining room means a steel and building control approval, which is better budgeted at the start than discovered halfway.
