Kitchens Granby

Granby is the furthest village we cover and one of the smallest — a couple of hundred people in the Vale of Belvoir, nineteen miles from our showroom. That is about thirty-five minutes, and worth saying plainly rather than implying we are local.

The housing is period brick and ironstone, farm buildings and farmhouses, with very little modern development. We cover Granby alongside Bingham, Cropwell Bishop, Cropwell Butler and the Vale villages.

Farmhouse and cottage kitchens

Thick walls, ceilings that change height from room to room, and floors that have moved over two centuries. Structural beams in some of them that cannot be relocated and have to be designed around rather than boxed in and ignored.

Everything is scribed to the wall rather than pushed against it. A standard wall-unit run at standard height will foul a low ceiling in a good proportion of these rooms — a survey question rather than a showroom one, and far cheaper resolved before anything is ordered.

Where the ceiling is low, taking wall units right up to it gives a full extra shelf and removes the dust gap on top. In a smaller kitchen that storage is worth more than a cornice is.

Granby is the furthest and the smallest place we cover, a Vale of Belvoir village of a couple of hundred people with period brick and ironstone property and very little built since.

Ironstone buildings in particular have deep openings and walls that are nowhere near plumb. Nothing modular fits them. A framed kitchen scribed to the building is not a style preference here, it is the only approach that produces a clean result.

A good number of the kitchens in villages like this are in former farm buildings rather than houses, which brings its own set of problems: exposed structure, high or uneven ceilings, and services that have to be run a long way.

The advantage is freedom. With no existing kitchen to replace, the layout can follow the building rather than inherit a previous owner's compromise.

A long way from anywhere, the thing you want is a kitchen that can be maintained rather than replaced. Painted doors can be touched in and repainted. Dovetailed drawer boxes and soft-close runners are replaceable parts, not sealed units.

Services usually decide the layout

In old village property the constraint is rarely the design and almost always where the services already run. Waste is fixed, gas is often surface-mounted, and moving a sink any real distance means achieving a fall to the existing waste.

On a solid floor that is a bigger job than it looks. Doable, but it belongs in the plan and the price from the start rather than surfacing in week two.

There is very limited modern housing in Granby, but where a barn has been converted or an extension added, the new part of the building usually takes a contemporary treatment better than the old part ever will.

Straight walls, level floors and a clean ceiling line are what handleless doors need to look right.

Where old and new meet, we run one worktop through both and let the doors differ. Continuity in the horizontal plane reads as deliberate. Trying to match a modern door to an old one usually reads as a compromise.

Pentland Shale and Denton Porcelain Cashmere both sit quietly against ironstone. Strong colour competes with the building, which in a house like this is the wrong fight to pick.

Doors and colour

Painted shaker suits this housing. Rooms with small original windows take deeper colour better than pale finishes, which go flat and grey in that light — Colbeck Heritage Green and Georgian Thicket both hold their depth.

Warwick is the in-frame range, with the door set inside the cabinet frame rather than on the face of it. It is the more traditional construction and the right look in a farmhouse.

Denton Porcelain Cashmere is the pale option for brighter rooms. We fit Neff appliances, including the venting hobs.

About thirty-six minutes to Derby Road, Stapleford. Granby is the furthest of the Vale villages from the showroom, which is exactly why everything is out on display rather than in a folder.

The measured survey happens at the property, not the showroom. Distance does not change that.

Granby is Rushcliffe. A good proportion of the older stock here is listed, where internal alterations can need consent as well as external ones. Establish a property's status before designing round it.
