Bathrooms Derby
Derby’s bathrooms divide fairly cleanly by district, and knowing which one you are in tells you most of what the job will involve before anyone measures anything.
We fit bathrooms across the city from our showroom on Derby Road in Stapleford, twelve miles out on the A52.
The terraces
Normanton, Pear Tree, Allenton, Litchurch. Dense Victorian and Edwardian streets where the bathroom was added later over the rear outrigger — long, narrow, one external wall, window over the yard, and colder than everything else in the house because it was built on rather than built in.
The layout that works uses the length rather than fighting it: fitted furniture along the longer wall with the WC boxed into the run, and the shower at the far end. Trying to place a conventional three-piece suite in a room that shape leaves you edging past the bath.
Two practical points specific to this stock. Much of it is solid brick rather than cavity, so a bathroom on an external wall runs cold and shows condensation early — insulated backer board behind the tiling is usually worth including and is far cheaper done than retrofitted. And ventilation matters more here than anywhere: without extraction ducted properly outside, the plaster takes the moisture and the paint lifts within two winters.

Bathrooms Derby
Derby covers the full range — Victorian terraces, interwar semis, postwar estates, city-centre apartments and modern development. There is no typical Derby bathroom, and any page claiming otherwise is guessing.
What the property is decides almost everything: whether the floor is timber or concrete, whether there is an external wall to vent through, and whether the drainage can be moved at all. Those three answers shape the design before any question of style arises.
In a flat, the soil stack position and a communal drainage layout are usually fixed. Extraction may have to be ducted a long way or recirculated.
None of that prevents a good bathroom. It does mean the layout gets designed around the services rather than the other way round, and knowing it early saves redrawing later.
Out to Stapleford on the A52, with parking on site — which most city showrooms cannot offer.
Traditional Bathrooms Derby
The interwar semis
Littleover, Mickleover, Chaddesden, Alvaston. Square bathrooms upstairs, part of the original build, generally warm and well proportioned.
These take a separate bath and shower comfortably and are where most full refits come from. Where there is a separate WC next door — common in this stock — knocking the two together is frequently the best single move, and it is usually a stud wall rather than anything structural.
The airing cupboard often backs onto the bathroom in these houses and eats a stretch of usable wall. Once the system is understood it can sometimes be reduced or relocated, which changes what the room can hold.
Modern Bathrooms Derby
Newer estates
Oakwood, Sinfin, Boulton Moor. Regular rooms, straight walls, family bathroom plus en-suite.
Wall-hung furniture suits these and looks right in them, with the floor running underneath making a modest room read as larger. It needs a frame fixed back to something structural — in a stud wall that means opening it up and adding noggins, which should be visible in any quote you are comparing.

Traditional Bathroom Furniture
